1. How do I report suspected abuse of a child?

Call Child Protective Services at (804) 748-1100 and report the abuse. If you feel the child is in immediate danger, please call 911.

2. Do you offer parenting classes?

For parents of teens, we offer "Active Parenting of Teens." Contact the Office on Youth at (804) 520-9286 to learn more.

3. Do you offer tutoring programs for children with academic problems?

Contact the Office on Youth at (804) 520-9286 for information about our Kids’ Achieving Progress Afterschool Program. You may also want to check with your child’s teacher or guidance counselor at school for additional tutoring assistance options.

4. Where can I get help with a truant child?

Please contact the Colonial Heights Public Schools' Office of Support Services at (804) 524-3445.

5. Are teens required to have a work permit?

As of September 11, 2013, documents required to process a child labor permit can be found on the Department of Labor website at www.doli.virginia.gov. Parents may access the forms directly from this website. Detailed instructions are available on the website.

6. Where can I receive help as a victim of domestic violence?

Please contact the James House at (804) 458-2704 and/or the Colonial Heights Victim Witness Program Director at (804) 520-9258. If you are in need of medical attention, call 911. If the perpetrator is in your home now, call 911 and leave.

7. Where can I get information or assistance for teen pregnancy?

You may call the Colonial Heights Health Department at (804) 520-9380 for an appointment. Another resource is the Pregnancy Crisis Center in Petersburg at (804) 861-5433.

8. Where can I find information on counseling for my child in Colonial Heights?

We offer a Resource Directory online which has a listing of area counselors. If you have no insurance, we can refer you to District 19 - Colonial Heights Counseling Services. We also suggest that you contact your school guidance counselor.

9. How do I obtain custody or get needed child support?

Contact the Juvenile Probation Officer at (804) 520-9355 for information on custody issues. The Chesterfield/Colonial Heights Department of Social Services can assist a parent in getting child support. Their office may be reached at (804) 748-1100.

10. How do I apply for the WIC program or food stamps?

Call the Colonial Heights Health Department at (804) 520-9380 for information on WIC. The Chesterfield/Colonial Heights Department of Social Services, (804) 748-1100, can assist you with food stamps.

11. Where can I get information about the local school system in Colonial Heights?

You may call the Colonial Heights School Board Office at (804) 526-0811 or their Office of Support Services at (804) 524-3445.

12. Are there summer youth programs offered in Colonial Heights?

Contact the Department of Recreation & Parks at (804) 520-9390. They conduct a summer playground program and a teen program, along with many other activities at their Teen Center.

13. How do I join the Youth Advisory Council (YAC)?

A YAC application is available online or we can mail one to you. Please return your completed application to the Office on Youth, P.O. Box 3401, Colonial Heights. You will be advised of upcoming meetings. The Youth Advisory Council normally meets the first Monday of each month.

14. Is there a curfew for youth in Colonial Heights?

There is a curfew in Colonial Heights between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am everyday for youth ages 17 and under. There are exceptions - please refer to the Colonial Heights City Code, Chapter 116: CURFEW, for details.

In addition, Southpark Mall has a Youth Escort Policy (YEP) in effect on Friday and Saturday evenings after 6:00 pm requiring juveniles to be escorted by an adult within the mall or on mall property. Visit Southpark Mall Security Policies for details on the YEP policy.

15. How can I find information on area day care services or before/after school care?

Contact the Office on Youth at (804) 520-9286. We can provide you with a list of names and phone numbers for day care providers in the area.

16. How do I obtain information on places to stay and needed services relating to homelessness?

Please contact CARES (804-861-0865), the Chesterfield/Colonial Heights Department of Social Services (804-748-1100), the Salvation Army (804-225-7470), The Housing Crisis Line (804-972-0813) or CCHASM (804-796-2479). If school-age children are involved, contact Colonial Heights Public Schools’ Office of Support Services (804-524-3445).

17. How do I get my child involved in the Kids' Achieving Progress Afterschool Program?

The Kids' After School Program is for 4th through 8th graders who have social, behavioral or academic problems. Contact the Office on Youth at (804) 520-9286 for information.
