Program on “The Romantic Cemetery Movement”
Sergei Troubetzkoy, Director of Tourism for the City of Petersburg, will present a program on the “Romantic Cemetery Movement” on Wednesday, January 11th at the Colonial Heights Public Library. The establishment in 1804 of the Pere Lashaise Cemetery in Paris inspired the development of new cemeteries throughout Europe and North America. The designs of these burying grounds were a radical departure from previous ones in that they took on a park-like or “Romantic” appearance that invited people to visit, explore, and even picnic on the grounds. Sergei Troubetzkoy, who has frequently lectured and led tours dealing with this subject in multiple states, will provide an overview of the history of this movement and the impact that it had on American culture. The program will begin at 7:00 pm. in the large meeting room at the library and is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Colonial Heights Historical Society.
