1. What items are not allowed in the Courthouse?

By court order, the following items are NOT allowed in the Courthouse:

• Aerosol cans or spray bottles
• Cameras
• Cell phones
• Combustible or potentially explosive items
• Firearms of any kind
• Glass bottles
• Mace or pepper spray
• Sharp objects (i.e. knives, forks, razor blades, scissors, etc.)
• Tape recorders of any kind
• Tools (i.e. screwdrivers, cutters, hammers, etc.)

2. Where is the Colonial Heights jail?

The City of Colonial Heights does not maintain an independent jail, but we are a member jurisdiction and house our inmates at Riverside Regional Jail. The contact information and directions to the Jail are listed below:

1. Take Temple Ave East towards Prince George County; Drive 3.5 miles
2. Turn left onto River Road; Drive 3.7 miles (passing the Federal Prison)
3. Riverside Regional is located on the left

3. How do I visit an inmate in jail?

ALL inmate visitations must be arranged through the Riverside Regional Jail, NOT the Colonial Heights Sheriff’s Office. Prior to your visit, the inmate must sign you up for a specific date and time on the visitation schedule. Visitors must be 18 years of age unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

4. Does the Sheriff authorize any alternative sentencing programs?

Work Release and Weekend Confinement are the only two alternative programs currently approved by the Colonial Heights Sheriff’s Office. Home Incarceration or Electronic Monitoring is NOT offered by the Sheriff’s Office at this time.

Individuals wishing to participate in Work Release must have a sentence of 12 months or less and have verifiable employment or be currently enrolled as a full time student. Participants are subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening and must meet all required rules set forth by Riverside Regional Jail policy.

Individuals wishing to serve their sentence on weekends must have received a sentence of 60 days or less. If you were convicted of a felony, you are NOT eligible for weekends. Any person convicted of a crime of violence, resisting arrest or any crime which reasonably threatens the public safety will not be eligible to participate in any alternative sentencing.

Home Incarceration is available for unique situations, on a case by case basis and must meet the eligibility requirements of the Sheriff as well as Riverside Regional Jail.

5. Can I be notified when an inmate is going to be transported or released from jail?

The Sheriff's Office does NOT give out advance notification of inmate transports or release dates.

However, if you are a victim of a crime, you may request to be contacted by telephone and/or written notification of that inmate's scheduled release date. In order to receive this type of victim notification, you must register with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Victim/Witness Assistance Program. They may be contacted at (804) 520-9258.

6. How do I file a complaint with the Sheriff's Office?

HOW TO MAKE A COMPLAINT
1. If you wish to make a complaint about the actions of a Colonial Heights
Sheriff’s Office employee:
a. Come to the Colonial Heights Sheriff’s Office and tell any
employee that you want to make a complaint and they will direct
you to a supervisor who will assist you; or
b. Call the Colonial Heights Sheriff’s Office (804 520-9352) and
tell the person answering the phone that you want to make a
complaint; or
c. Request a complaint form through the mail by contacting the
Colonial Heights Sheriff’s Office or write out your complaint and
mail it to the Sheriff at:

2. A Colonial Heights Sheriff’s Office supervisor may assist you in filling
out a complaint form. This form asks you to identify yourself and give
specific details about your complaint.
3. Your complaint will be investigated. You may be contacted and asked
additional questions about your complaint.
4. If the investigation becomes lengthy, you will be advised of such.
5. When the investigation into your complaint has concluded; the Sheriff
or Chief Deputy will review the investigation and contact you in writing
informing you what has been done regarding your complaint.
