The Heat Index is not just the air temperature. It's a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature. This value is a more accurate indicator of the heat stress on the body.
Heat Index Safety Guidelines
LOW RISK
Below 90°F
Activity: Normal practices.
Hydration: Regular water breaks (every 20-30 mins).
Monitoring: Normal monitoring for fatigue.
MODERATE RISK
90°F - 98°F
Activity: Use caution; more intense drills should be limited.
Hydration: Mandatory water breaks every 20 mins.
Rest: Provide 3-4 rest breaks per hour in the shade.
HIGH RISK
99°F - 104°F
Activity: Limit practice to 2 hours. Reduce equipment.
Hydration: Frequent mandatory water breaks.
Rest: Increase rest-to-play ratio significantly.
EXTREME RISK
Above 105°F
Activity: CANCEL or postpone all outdoor practices.
Safety: Move activities to an air-conditioned space.
Risk: Extreme danger of heatstroke.
Recognizing the Signs
Heat Exhaustion
•Dizziness or Fainting
•Heavy Sweating
•Pale, Clammy Skin
•Nausea or Vomiting
•Weak, Rapid Pulse
•Headache
ACTION: Move to a cool place, sip water, use cool cloths.
Heatstroke (MEDICAL EMERGENCY)
•Confusion or Altered Mental State
•High Body Temp (104°F+)
•Hot, Red, Dry or Damp Skin
•Loss of Consciousness
•Rapid, Strong Pulse
•Seizures
ACTION: CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY. Cool person until help arrives.
